Information We Collect

Text You Fact-Check

When you highlight or paste text into Kweli, we send only that specific text to Google's Fact Check API to retrieve fact-checks. We do not store this text permanently or associate it with your identity.

Email Address (Required for Trial & Paid Plans)

We collect your email address when you start a free trial or subscribe to a paid plan. We use this for:

• Account creation, login, and trial activation
• License management
• Sending subscription receipts and renewal reminders
• Providing customer support

Phone Number (Optional)

You may optionally provide your phone number during trial signup. If provided, we may use it to:

• Send product updates and new feature announcements
• Notify you about new tools in our product family

You can opt out of marketing messages at any time by contacting support@kweli.app. Your phone number is never shared with third parties or used for advertising.

Payment Information

We do not directly handle payment data. Payments are processed through third-party providers:

• Gumroad — for one-time purchases and subscriptions
• Lemon Squeezy — for subscription management

These processors handle all credit card information. We only receive confirmation of payment status, not your payment details.

Extension Interaction Data

We may collect limited, anonymous data about how you use the extension, such as:

• Number of fact-checks performed (for quota management)
• Extension crashes or errors (for debugging)
• Feature usage patterns (to improve the extension)

This data is never linked to your identity or browsing behavior.

How We Use Your Information

We use information only for these specific purposes:

• Providing the service — Fact-checking claims you submit
• Account management — Managing subscriptions and licenses
• Support — Responding to your questions or technical issues
• Legal compliance — Meeting tax, payment, and regulatory requirements
• Service improvement — Fixing bugs and improving the extension

Data We Don't Collect

Kweli is designed with privacy as a core principle. We explicitly do not collect:

• Browsing history — We don't track which websites you visit
• User behavior — We don't monitor what you search for or read
• Cookies (tracking) — We don't use tracking cookies or pixels
• Location data — We don't access your location
• Device information — We don't collect device IDs or hardware details
• Keystroke logs — We never monitor your keyboard input beyond the text you highlight
• Metadata from claims — We don't retain context about where or when you fact-checked something

Third-Party Services

Kweli relies on trusted third-party services. Here's how we protect your privacy with them:

Google Fact Check API

We send only the text you fact-check to Google's Fact Check API to retrieve verified fact-checks from trusted publishers. We do not store this data and Google does not link it to your Google account. Review Google's API privacy terms.

Gumroad (Payment Processing)

Gumroad processes payments and manages one-time purchases. We share only your email and payment information with Gumroad. Review Gumroad's privacy policy.

Lemon Squeezy (Subscription Management)

Lemon Squeezy handles recurring subscriptions and license management. We share only your email and payment status with Lemon Squeezy. Review Lemon Squeezy's privacy policy.

Fact-Check Publishers

Kweli displays fact-checks from Reuters, Associated Press, Snopes, PolitiFact, BBC Verify, AFP, and other trusted sources. These are fetched from Google's aggregated database, not directly from their servers.

Data Security

We take data security seriously:

• Encryption in transit — All communication with our servers and third-party APIs uses HTTPS encryption
• Minimal data retention — We don't permanently store your fact-check requests
• No logging of claims — Text you fact-check is not logged or archived
• Regular security audits — We test our systems for vulnerabilities
• Limited access — Only essential team members can access user data

However, no system is 100% secure. If you believe your data has been compromised, please contact us immediately at support@kweli.app.

Children's Privacy

Kweli is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we learn we've collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it immediately.

Your Data Rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and other applicable privacy laws, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

• Right to Access — You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
• Right to Correction — You can request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete data
• Right to Deletion — You can request that we delete your personal data
• Right to Portability — You can request your data in a structured, machine-readable format
• Right to Opt-Out — You can opt out of non-essential data collection (such as marketing communications) via extension settings or by contacting us
• Right to Restrict Processing — You can request that we limit how we use your data

If you are a California resident, you also have the right to know what personal information we collect, disclose, or sell (we do not sell personal information). You can designate an authorized agent to make requests on your behalf.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use Disclosure

Kweli complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the "Limited Use" requirements. Specifically:

• We do not sell your data — to any third party, ever
• We do not use data for advertising — or for serving targeted ads
• We do not use data for creditworthiness — or any form of lending assessment
• We do not transfer data to third parties — except as necessary to provide the fact-checking service (Google Fact Check API) or as required by law

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy occasionally to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. We will post updates here with a new "Last updated" date. If we make material changes, we will notify users via email or through the extension.

Your continued use of Kweli after changes become effective means you accept the updated policy.
